Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic year. Also known as the Holy month, it is well acknowledged as the time in which Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset.
Prayer, charity and family gatherings are the essence of this holy month which is intended to teach Muslims about humility and spirituality. As Muslims follow the Hijri calendar (which is shorter than the Gregorian), the dates of Ramadan move forward slightly each year; so this year, 2011, Ramadan will begin on the 1st August and likely to end around the 30th August.
Like the rest of the Muslim world, Ramadan is a special time for people in the UAE and Abu Dhabi. Visitors to the country will notice a quieter atmosphere during the day, with stores being emptier than usual and restaurants remaining closed. At night however, the city comes alive with fun activities designed to bring families and friends together. During Ramadan there are two traditional feasts that Muslims enjoy; Suhour, which is the feast before the sunrise, and Iftar, which is the meal to break the fast at sunset. Non-Muslim visitors are encouraged to attend both Suhour and Iftar celebrations across the city to learn and enjoy the traditional feasts and cultural activities.
